Transform Your Classroom with the One Word Project

Are you looking for a fresh approach to goal-setting that’s both simple and impactful? The One Word Project might be just what you and your class need. Instead of overwhelming your students at the beginning of the year or each term with complex goal setting, try having them focus on a single, meaningful word.

What Is a One Word Project?

The One Word Project is a simple but effective way for kids to set goals for themselves. The idea is for each student to choose a single word that will guide them throughout the school year. This word can be anything that is motivating to the individual student, such as “friendship,” “leadership,” or “kindness.”

The One Word Project is a great way for kids to:

  • Simplify goal setting: By focusing on just one word, kids are less likely to feel overwhelmed.
  • Stay focused: Having a word to guide them can help kids stay on track throughout the year.
  • Increase motivation: A word that is meaningful to them can help kids stay motivated to achieve their goals.

How to Easily Implement It In Your Classroom:

1.Introduce the One Word Project to your students. Explain the concept and why it is important to set goals. I love introducing the One Word Project by reading the book, One Word for Kids by Jon Gordon, Dan Britton, and Jimmy Page.

2. Have students brainstorm a list of words that are meaningful to them. Help students choose a word that they will be able to commit to for the entire year. Here are some great word ideas below.

3. Create a display in your classroom where students can share their words.

4. Encourage students to reflect on their word throughout the year. Ask them how their word is guiding their decisions and actions.

Free One Word Bookmarks

To help you bring the One Word Project into your own classroom, I’ve put together a free One Word Bookmark activity, complete with 22 pre-written words that I think you and your students will love using during the first week back at school. This activity is perfect for getting students to think about their goals in a fun and meaningful way.

Make It Visual: One Word Goal Bunting

If you want to take this One Word Project to the next level, consider creating a beautiful bunting display in your classroom. This not only serves as a constant reminder of your students’ one word goals but also adds a personal and decorative touch to your space.

What’s Your One Word?

As teachers, we also need to set goals, right? I’m a big believer in leading by example, so I make sure to choose my own one-word goal each year. This year, mine is “balance.” I’m always striving to get that work/life balance just right, and this word helps keep me focused on what matters most.

Reflecting On the One Word Project Throughout the Year

Once students have chosen their one word, encourage them to keep it in mind throughout the year. Let it guide their decisions and actions. When they’re faced with a challenge, suggest they ask themselves, “What would someone who is [their one word] do?”

So why not give the One Word Project a try? Your students will thank you, and who knows—your one word might just become your new mantra for the entire year.

Happy Goal-Setting! 🎉
