As teachers, we know how important it is to help students set goals and dream big. But how can we make it fun and meaningful? One great solution is using vision boards. They combine creativity, goal-setting, and a lot of fun, making them perfect for the classroom.
Whether it’s the start of a new year or a mid-year activity, incorporating a vision board activity (check out my templates here) for your students into your lessons is an excellent way to inspire them to dream big and stay motivated throughout the year.
What is a Vision Board?
A vision board is a simple way for students (or adults) to show their goals, dreams, and ideas. Using pictures, words, and creativity, they can make something that keeps them inspired all year long.
Why Vision Boards Work for Students
Vision boards are more than just a creative activity—they’re a way for students to visualize their dreams, set goals, and stay motivated throughout the year. By creating a vision board, students learn how to:
- Reflect on what they want to achieve.
- Turn big dreams into actionable steps.
- Stay focused on their goals with a visual reminder.
Step 1: Start with Brainstorming
Before students begin to plan their vision boards, have a discussion about the difference between dreams and goals. Dreams are the big, exciting ideas we hope for—like becoming an astronaut, writing a book, or traveling the world. Goals, on the other hand, are the smaller, actionable steps we can take to help make those dreams a reality—like practicing a skill or saving up for something you really want.
Explain that vision boards are a great way to capture both. Students can include images and words that represent their big dreams while also adding actionable goals to help them stay focused and motivated.
Before students start creating, help your students brainstorm their ideas. Guide them with questions like:
- What’s a fun activity you’d love to try this year?
- What’s one big goal you’d like to achieve?
- What’s a habit or fear you’d like to leave behind?
- What’s one thing you want to get better at this year?
- Who is someone you admire, and what qualities do they have that you’d like to develop?
- What’s a new skill you’d like to learn?
- What’s a way you could help your friends, family, or community this year?
- What’s a place you’d love to visit?
- What kind of person do you want to be known as by the end of the year?
- What’s one thing that makes you feel happy or excited that you want to do more of?
- What’s a challenge you’re ready to overcome?
To make this process simple, you can use a Vision Board Brainstorming Worksheet. It’s an easy way for students to organize their thoughts and reflect on their goals. My 2025 Vision Board Templates include a ready-to-use brainstorming sheet.
Step 2: Choose the Right Vision Board Format
Vision board can be adapted to fit any classroom setup. Here are two popular options:
- Printable Vision Boards: Students can cut out images, draw, and paste their ideas onto paper. It’s perfect for hands-on learners who love arts and crafts.
- Digital Vision Boards: Students can use Canva or Google Slides to create their boards online. They can easily drag and drop photos, add text, and decorate with stickers.
My Vision Board Templates Bundle includes both options, making it easy to choose the format that works best for your students.
Step 3: Get Creative
Encourage students to make their vision boards personal and unique by adding:
- A “Word of the Year”: A single word to inspire them, like “courage” or “growth.”
- Inspirational Quotes: Short phrases that motivate and uplift.
- Fun Decorations: Stickers, drawings, or colorful borders to make their boards pop.
For digital boards, students can add fun stickers and digital photos. Playing with fun fonts and images can adds an extra layer of creativity and fun to the process!
Step 4: Reflect and Share
Once the vision boards are complete, encourage students to reflect on their work. Here are a few ways to do this:
- Host a “gallery walk” where students can display their boards.
- Ask them to share one goal they’re excited about.
- Display the boards in the classroom or let students take them home as a daily reminder of their goals.
Reflection is an important part of any vision board activity, as it helps students connect emotionally with their goals.
Creative Vision Board Ideas for Students
If you’re looking for unique twists on vision boards, try these ideas:
- Theme-Specific Vision Boards: Focus on a specific area like academics, personal growth, or hobbies.
- Collaborative Vision Boards: Create a shared class vision board with collective goals for the year.
- Mini Vision Boards: Use smaller formats for desks or binders, so students can keep them close by.
Vision boards don’t have to be complicated for your students—they just need to reflect what’s meaningful to them.
