Do you find yourself repeating the same old morning meeting questions year after year? It can be SO easy to fall into that routine, but injecting some freshness into our classroom discussions can make a world of difference for our students (and ourselves). Here are five of my favorite morning meeting questions that kids absolutely love!
1. What is your favorite way to eat ______?
This morning meeting question sparks endless creativity and opinion-sharing. Whether it’s “What’s your favorite way to eat – cheese, ice cream, or chocolate?” students love debating why their preferred way of enjoying a food is THE best way. It’s such a simple question that can lead to lively and engaging discussions.
2. What are your top three…?
From naming their top three current wish-list items to their favorite days of the week (this one is actually so interesting) to their top three four-legged animals, these morning meeting questions allow for a variety of responses. Once your students know each other better, you can even ask them to list the top three things they think YOU, their teacher, always say—you’ll be amused and surprised at how well they know you!
3. Rank _____ from 1 to 4.
Challenge your students during your morning meeting to prioritize their preferences by ranking options from 1 to 4. Whether it’s ranking hot foods, seasons, or book genres, these morning meeting questions encourage critical thinking and help students articulate their preferences clearly. This activity not only engages students but also fosters a deeper understanding of their personal likes and dislikes.
4. What animal photo sums up how you feel this week?
Using funny animal photos depicting different emotions, ask your students to choose the one that best represents how they’re feeling. These morning meeting questions not only spark interesting discussions but also provide valuable insight into their emotional well-being. This engaging activity helps create a supportive classroom environment and encourages students to express their feelings in a fun and visual way.
5. Would you rather…?
A classic conversation starter that never gets old! Would you rather questions can be a fantastic addition to your morning meeting questions lineup. They range from silly to thought-provoking, offering students a chance to share their preferences and reasoning in a lighthearted way. This engaging activity not only warms up the group but also encourages critical thinking and communication.
Morning meetings are a fantastic opportunity to create meaningful connections with our classmates and build a positive classroom environment. If you’re looking to breathe new life into your routine, try incorporating these morning meeting questions into your discussions. Your students will appreciate the fresh approach and the chance to engage more deeply with one another!
